YO, JOE! Spotlight on Larry Hama and G.I.Joe

Any comics fan who was alive in the 1980s should be familiar with the work of Larry Hama. After illustrating titles like MARVEL PREMIERE and KA-ZAR for Marvel in the 1970s, Hama worked as an editor for DC, on titles such as WONDER WOMAN, SUPER FRIENDS, and MISTER MIRACLE. But it was in 1982 that Hama revamped the classic G.I. JOE franchise for Hasbro and Marvel, re-envisioning the property as “America’s Daring Special Mission Force” composed of an army of expert soldiers, ninjas, and weapons specialists. In addition to scripting (and occasionally illustrating) every issue of the Marvel Comics tie-in series but one, Hama also wrote nearly all of the “File Card” dossiers included with every action figure and accessory. In addition to creating the Sci-fi action series NTH MAN: THE ULTIMATE NINJA for Marvel and scripting fan favourites like WOLVERINE, PUNISHER WAR ZONE, and GENERATION X, Hama has also written BATMAN for DC, and is currently continuing the adventures of his most famous creations in the ongoing G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO series for IDW Publishing. He has also dabbled in acting, appearing on episodes of M.A.S.H. and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, and is also known for creating the BUCKY O’HARE series, which was spun off into a popular animated series, toy line, and video game

Miniature Painting Seminar

Never painted a miniature model before?  Played table top strategy games with metallic and dull grey camo? Just looking for some new tricks?  We have a seminar for you!

Starting with the basics: cleaning and building your models, priming, basing colours and simple techniques.  I’ll give some tips and tricks on getting your models to look great, and how to speed up your painting as well!  We’ll look into batch painting and time-saving ideas that still lead to a fantastic finish.

As a final bonus, I’ll lightly delve into the dark underworld... of advanced painting techniques!  Quite the opposite of the previous piece, this will definitely slow you down at first... but the results can be jaw droppingly good!  Who doesn’t like to drop a few jaws?

On hand to see will be: examples of what I’m talking about, a few different types of paint to look at (not too many variant brands though, I’m a little hooked on GW), some tools of the trade (it’s more than dollar store brushes and hot glue!) and a few funny examples of how it can all go wrong.

Finally there will be a Q&A period, time permitting, where I’ll try and answer questions from anyone who’s interested.  I don’t have all the answers, but I have a good deal of tips and tricks to share.  I am a self-proclaimed professional after all.  Just ask Fat Apollo; it means a lot to declare one’s destiny....(Ed Switzer)

Storyboarding with Dave Cullen

A film storyboard is essentially a large comic of a film, play or performance produced beforehand to help directors, cinematographers and other production personnel visualize the scenes and find potential problems before they occur. Often storyboards include arrows or instructions that indicate movement.

In creating a motion picture with any degree of fidelity to a script, a storyboard provides a visual layout of events as they are to be seen through the camera lens. And in the case of interactive media, it is the layout and sequence in which the user or viewer sees the content or information. In the storyboarding process, most technical details involved in crafting a film or interactive media project can be efficiently described either in picture, or in additional text.Illustrator Dave Cullen will show the work that goes into producing storyboards using examples from his career including storyboards from the science fiction television series LEXX.
