YO, JOE! Spotlight on Larry Hama and G.I.Joe

Any comics fan who was alive in the 1980s should be familiar with the work of Larry Hama. After illustrating titles like MARVEL PREMIERE and KA-ZAR for Marvel in the 1970s, Hama worked as an editor for DC, on titles such as WONDER WOMAN, SUPER FRIENDS, and MISTER MIRACLE. But it was in 1982 that Hama revamped the classic G.I. JOE franchise for Hasbro and Marvel, re-envisioning the property as “America’s Daring Special Mission Force” composed of an army of expert soldiers, ninjas, and weapons specialists. In addition to scripting (and occasionally illustrating) every issue of the Marvel Comics tie-in series but one, Hama also wrote nearly all of the “File Card” dossiers included with every action figure and accessory. In addition to creating the Sci-fi action series NTH MAN: THE ULTIMATE NINJA for Marvel and scripting fan favourites like WOLVERINE, PUNISHER WAR ZONE, and GENERATION X, Hama has also written BATMAN for DC, and is currently continuing the adventures of his most famous creations in the ongoing G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO series for IDW Publishing. He has also dabbled in acting, appearing on episodes of M.A.S.H. and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, and is also known for creating the BUCKY O’HARE series, which was spun off into a popular animated series, toy line, and video game
